Darrin Patrick – Track 3 – Think Team
-
The most important asset in the church is you.
Everyone imitates you. Everyone will do things just like you. Team is overrated if the leader is not biblically qualified, properly motivated.
God’s voice, if you are not hearing it, will cause big problems with you. His voice must be louder than all other voices.
As you hear His voice, you will see your wickedness, brokenness…but you will feel all the more unconditionally loved.
What is fueling your mission? Voice of God or planting a church?
Do you think more highly of yourself than you should (Romans 12:3)
1 Timothy 3
* character of the leader, character of the team *
- one woman kind of man
- temperate
- free of lack of control – not being distracted – MUST FOCUS…SOUND MIND
- respectable – remember, they are imitating you…well ordered life (meetings on time)
- hospitable – you must know lost people
- able to teach – great teachers attract great leaders
- not addicted – improper releases
- gentle – this means, you need to be tough but not abusive in power- the key to ministry is thick skin, but a soft heart…there are times when you want to get your point across – sometimes back away and let love win.
- Managing your children – if you are not leading your home, how can you lead your church? Some of you are great pastors but terrible husbands and fathers…your team will follow that.
- Not a new convert – you better have some wisdom around you.
overseer – looking out into the future…overseeing the church. Your concern is over the church as a whole.
Mark 3
Jesus is getting ready to pick his team.
v. 13 – Jesus went up to the mountain to be with His Father. God is developing your gut. You’ve got to know when your discernment drops…where is that line? When people are talented? When there are other ethnicities and other ages? When there are people who are not like you? Do you allow stuff to happen because of these things…do you allow these people in positions because of talent, theology, articulate?
You’ve got to build with who you have…some of you don’t have many of these people who are long term…but there are some, even a few, who are scaffolding…they will be used by God for a time to get you to a place.
You must find people you like, people you can have fun with…but they have to able to preach and cast out demons too.
* Remember, Jesus wanted these guys with Him *
You need to know people’s personalities (Myers-Briggs, etc)
You should have an internship program in your church…a place where people can stick there feet in the water and see if it’s for them
Gerber says there are 3 types of people:
1- Entrepreneur - dreamers, starters
2- Managers - takes vision and creates system(s)
3- Technicians – worker bees
* Hire slowly, fire quickly! *
Our temptation is to put up guys TOO QUICKLY…will kill them and your church. Moving quickly will be to your own peril.
Your other team members will lose respect for you.
Nobody is ever going to care about the church more than you.
Ministry is not about getting stuff complete…it’s about getting people complete.
People SEE THROUGH getting used.
All you can do is create an environment for people to learn to grow, fly, and live freely. Some will not make it. All you can do is creating that environment. That community is infectious!
Shared burden, shared celebration…that’s team.
Who do you spend your time on/with as a pastor? You must make the distinction between loyal and leader…the biggest struggle in a pastor’s time is WHO you are spending your time with.
